Emergency Lighting
Emergency lighting assists in helping keep yourself, your staff and your customers safe. It provides a lit passage of egress for the safe exit of a property in the event of an emergency situation. The Building Codes of Australia and the Australian Standards govern the rules and regulations for emergency lighting that all property owners must adhere to. Failure to comply can lead to penalties and put lives at risk.
Codes & Standards
Emergency lighting is governed by the Building Codes of Australia Part E4 as well as the Australian Standards AS2293.1 – System Design, Installation and Operation, AS2293.2 – Inspection and Maintenance and AS2293.3 – Emergency Escape Luminaires and Exit Signs. These Codes and Standards layout the rules and regulations regarding the emergency lighting requirements for different classes of buildings. The rules and regulations include the type of fitting, the location they are required and the maintenance schedule. The aim is to ensure there is a sufficiently lit path of egress that is maintained and ready to operate in an emergency situation.
Emergency Light Testing
The Australian Standard AS2293.2 sets out the periodic inspection and maintenance procedures necessary to ensure the emergency lighting system is operating correctly, in accordance with the Standards. Every six months a test must be performed by isolating the general supply of electricity for a period of 90-minutes. Any emergency lights and exits signs that perform for less than the 90-minute period will be deemed to have failed the test and will require repair/replacement.
